In the lecture, archaeologists from the CVMBAT project will report on the excavations, their historical context and their significance.
The finds of early Roman militaria around the Crap Ses Gorge in the municipality of Surses have been known for about 20 years. New discoveries from 2017 onwards, including a dagger with silver inlay, led to a joint research project "CVMBAT" by the Archaeological Service of the Grisons and the Vindonissa Professorship at the University of Basel.
The field campaigns carried out between 2021 and 2024 involved students from the University of Basel as well as volunteer detectorists. A battlefield in the Crestas/Burschignas corridor and an observation post on the Plang Ses were identified, dating back to the last decades before the birth of Christ.
The high-resolution LiDAR data also led to the discovery of a Roman camp (castellum) on Colm la Runga, 2200 m above sea level, in 2023. In the summer of 2024, the first archaeological excavations were carried out in the castellum; the investigations will continue this year and can be visited between 14 and 27 August 2025.
