UNESCO Welterbe Strecke Albulalinie
Before following the route of the world’s slowest express train across Switzerland, the Glacier Bike Tour starts in a place that could hardly be more glamorous or more scenic: the stunning beauty of the Upper Engadine plateau, the first pass, the surrealistic serpentines of the Rhaetian Railway (UNESCO world heritage), and finally the picturesque village of Bergün.

Details

Description

The Upper Engadin high valley, a lake plateau lined with larch forests in the middle of the alpine three-thousand metre landscape with Lake St. Moritz, where the Glacier Bike Tour starts.

Towards Bever, the route continues along the wide high valley alongside the Inn, which has its source here in the Engadin. In La-Punt, you finally start to gain metres in altitude - you head up to the Albula Pass, the first of three passes on the Glacier Bike Tour. If possible, you should avoid cycling on weekends and in the high season.

The Albula Pass is steeped in history and is one of the most beautiful passes in Switzerland. Accompanied by a concert of marmot whistles, you wind your way through the mighty panorama up to 2,315 metres - not quite the highest point of the Glacier Bike Tour

Finally, Bergün is a pretty village with old Engadine houses decorated with sgraffiti and bay windows. Such a perfect backdrop that the first Heidi film was shot here in the early 1950s, as well as a new version in 2015.

Geheimtipp

You should definitely visit the Albula Railway Museum and the Kurhaus, a beautiful Art Nouveau building in Bergün.

Sicherheitshinweis

Ausrüstung

Which e-bike should I take on the Glacier Bike Tour? Professional biker (and double E-MTB world champion) Nathalie Schneitter presents the perfect bike here in the video: a robust & comfortable fully, equipped with wide, grippy tyres, powerful brakes &, if possible, a dropper seat post.

Even in the height of summer, you have to be prepared for anything in the mountains: So what do you pack in your bike bags for such a special endeavour that takes you over 3 mountain passes, through high Alpine and Mediterranean landscapes? Bike pro Nathalie Schneitter has already completed the Glacier Bike Tour and reveals her packing list here.
